Heal From the Past with EMDR Therapy
Ever Feel Like You’re Stuck in Survival Mode?
You might be calm one minute… and spiraling the next.
You might be overthinking everything you said in a conversation.
Or maybe your body is on high alert even when nothing is wrong.
Whether you're healing from trauma or navigating chronic anxiety, EMDR can help.
At Benevolent Therapy, we offer trauma-informed EMDR therapy to help your nervous system finally feel safe again.
What Is EMDR Therapy?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a powerful therapy that helps your brain process difficult memories and emotional patterns — so they no longer run the show.
Instead of just talking about what happened or trying to outthink your anxiety, EMDR works by tapping into your brain’s natural healing process. It uses something called bilateral stimulation (like eye movements or tapping) to help you reprocess memories, fears, and beliefs that have been stuck for too long.
It sounds a little strange, but the results are anything but. Clients often report:
✅ Feeling less emotionally reactive
✅ Noticing reduced physical symptoms (like racing heart or tight chest)
✅ Letting go of self-blame or guilt
✅ Becoming less triggered by past situations
✅ Thinking more clearly and feeling more grounded
EMDR Helps With More Than Just
“Big T” Trauma
You don’t need to have a single big, obvious trauma to benefit from EMDR.
This therapy is incredibly effective for people who:
Constantly overthink or replay conversations
Feel emotionally flooded or overwhelmed often
Struggle with perfectionism or people-pleasing
Grew up in emotionally immature or unsafe environments
Feel like they “should be over it by now,” but aren’t
Live with chronic anxiety or low self-worth
Have a hard time feeling safe, calm, or connected
If any of that sounds like you — you’re not broken. Your brain is just trying to protect you with the tools it has. EMDR gives it new tools.
What EMDR Therapy Actually Looks Like (No, You Don’t Lie on a Couch and Watch a Pendulum)
We won’t dive straight into your deepest pain on Day 1.
Here’s how EMDR works in real life:
1. Preparation
We build trust first. You’ll learn calming tools and we’ll explore the patterns you're stuck in. This phase is all about safety and stabilization — especially if anxiety or trauma is making day-to-day life feel hard.
2. Targeting
We identify the “targets” — these could be past memories, present triggers, or fears about the future. We’ll also uncover the negative beliefs that came with them (like “I’m not good enough” or “I can’t relax”).
3. Reprocessing
With your consent and at your pace, we’ll use bilateral stimulation (eye movements, tapping, or audio tones) while you revisit those targets. Your brain does the rest — connecting dots, clearing out emotional residue, and rewriting the story with new meaning.
4. Integration
We make space for the shift. Clients often notice changes outside of session — feeling calmer, thinking more clearly, or reacting differently to things that used to trigger them.
